The indictment against Bannon refers to two counts of money laundering. He risks up to 15 years in prison.
Everything revolves around fraud allegedly committed with the ‘We Build the Wall’ recruitment campaign. Bannon received his first indictment for financial fraud in 2020. The former White House adviser was even arrested in August 2020. He, along with three others, allegedly embezzled part of the $25 million donated to build a wall between the US and Mexico, a promise from Donald Trump’s election campaign. .

Bannon was never convicted, however, as Trump pardoned him. That happened on January 19, 2021, a day before he left the White House to his successor Joe Biden. At the time, it was a federal case. This time, the 68-year-old Bannon is being charged by the New York State Prosecutor’s Office, and that charge resembles the federal one. According to the New York indictment, 11,000 donors from across New York state were defrauded of more than $730,000.
“Making a profit by lying to donors is a crime, and in New York you will be held accountable,” said prosecutor Alvin Bragg. “Steve Bannon acted as the architect of a multimillion-dollar scheme to defraud thousands of donors.” Trump’s pardon applies only to the federal case.
