Start of construction for a large logistics center in Erfurt

After Gera, the internet retailer Amazon is planning a second major logistics location in Thuringia.

The new building is being built in Erfurt by the project developer Atmira, who symbolically started construction in Erfurt on Tuesday. “The Atmira Group is investing in a logistics building in Erfurt that Amazon is renting for the long term,” said an Amazon spokesman on request. This is a major construction project that will take some time to complete. The spokesman did not provide any information on the number of jobs.

Amazon already maintains a logistics center in Gera – according to earlier information, up to 2000 jobs should be created. According to Amazon, it has invested around 130 million euros in the East Thuringian location.

In Erfurt, there has been a distribution center with around 200 employees for several years, from which the packages and parcels packed in the logistics centers are brought to the customers.

The new building in Erfurt will take place in the international logistics center in the north of the Thuringian state capital on the A71 motorway. Among other things, it should receive a solar system for generating electricity.

The Verdi union, the left in the Thuringian state parliament and representatives of the Erfurt city council faction “Wertstadt” criticized the working conditions at Amazon. Verdi asked the internet retailer to commit to a collective agreement. “Amazon has been refusing collective bargaining for retail and mail order for almost ten years now,” said the Verdi union.

A number of Internet retailers and logistics providers have invested in the Thuringian state capital in recent years. (dpa)
