Bethesda Unveils Ambitious Roadmap Following Xbox Overhaul
After a significant restructuring at Xbox, Bethesda is looking toward the future with an extensive roadmap that fans have eagerly awaited. The development of The Elder Scrolls VI is now in full swing, alongside the eagerly anticipated remasters of Fallout 3 and New Vegas.
A New Era for Bethesda
This month, Asha Sharma, the new head of Xbox, initiated the largest restructuring in the history of Microsoft’s gaming division, resulting in the departure of five studios and the layoffs of approximately 3,200 employees. This wave of changes has certainly affected Bethesda, as Jill Braff, head of Bethesda’s parent company ZeniMax, emphasized a need to “change course.” Today, Bethesda delivered a detailed statement and roadmap for the coming years, aiming to reassure fans.
More Than Just Games: A Look into the Future
In an official statement released on social media, Bethesda reflected on its 40-year history, addressing the community directly. One of the key messages was the studio’s intent to fix past mistakes, particularly the long content gaps between releases, promising to deliver faster without sacrificing quality.
“Over forty years, we’ve developed games that entertain almost half a billion players. More than just games—they are worlds,” the statement reads. Bethesda is committed to bringing its teams closer together to expedite game releases, extend support, and collaboratively enhance games for years to come.
To achieve this, Bethesda will utilize the newly developed Creation Engine 3, a shared technology platform that will allow simultaneous development of The Elder Scrolls VI and the officially announced Fallout 5.
While Fallout 5 is still in its early stages, the highly anticipated sequel to Skyrim is progressing remarkably well. Developers recognize the long wait fans have endured and aim to reward their patience.
“The Elder Scrolls VI is our primary development focus today, with most of our team working on the next chapter in the series,” Bethesda stated. Even after 15 years and over 65 million copies sold, players are still exploring Skyrim, but they know the wait for a sequel has been long.
Fallout Offensive: Obsidian Returns and Remasters Confirmed
Arguably, the most significant update in Bethesda’s roadmap involves the Fallout franchise. Confirming previous reports, Bethesda announced that Obsidian Entertainment, the RPG specialists, are rejoining the team to work on a new Fallout project.
“The wasteland is expanding, as we unite again with our long-time friends at Obsidian Entertainment. We are excited to confirm they are working with us on a new Fallout project,” the studio noted.
Additionally, Bethesda made it official that the remasters for Fallout 3 and Fallout: New Vegas will be developed, responding to the numerous rumors that have circulated online. “We know many players want to relive earlier Fallout experiences. While we can’t announce dates today, we are actively working on remasters for both Fallout 3 and Fallout: New Vegas.”
What’s Next for Starfield?
Finally, Bethesda shared updates regarding Starfield. Despite the mixed reactions online and the focus on its flagship franchises, Bethesda is not abandoning its sci-fi epic.
With over 17 million players, Starfield remains a mainstay for the studio. Bethesda promises new stories and gameplay enhancements as the game enters its “Year 3.” Furthermore, fans can expect additional Starborn content next year.
The studio is also committed to expanding its successful modding system, Creations, where creative players have already earned over $10 million in royalties.
As Bethesda moves forward, fans have reasons to be optimistic about the future of both new and beloved franchises. With the promise of more frequent and higher-quality content, it’s clear that the excitement surrounding Bethesda’s upcoming projects is just beginning.
