Son of Nichols Kyle Johnson shared the sad news on his mother’s Facebook account.

– I am deeply sorry to inform you that the great light in the sky no longer shines for us as it has shone all these years, Johnson writes.

A writer who wrote for The New York Times on Johnson’s behalf Sky Conway reported the cause of death as long-standing heart failure.

Nichols had a long and impressive career in the entertainment world. She started her career at a young age by performing in various clubs as both a singer and a dancer, continuing her career on television.

Nichols is best remembered for his role in the world famous TV series Star Trek. Nichols, seen in the sci-fi show as Nyota Uhuran, has been a role model for many women and minorities during her career.
