SP leader Lilian Marijnissen is resigning. ‘The party needs a new face’

Lilian Marijnissen leaves the House of Representatives and stops as SP leader. She is now drawing her conclusions after seven election defeats in a row.

Marijnissen himself reports this on X.

In a statement it said that ‘the party needs a new face’ due to the disappointing election results. The SP shrank from nine to five seats. Since Marijnissen succeeded Emile Roemer as party leader at the end of 2017, the Socialists have lost in all elections.

“I have always been aware that it is a great, but also temporary honor to be the captain of my party,” Marijnissen wrote upon her farewell. She seemed to be preparing for that a bit last week. Then Marijnissen said she was prepared to step aside if the party asked her to do so.

Marijnissen will say goodbye to the House of Representatives on Tuesday

That request apparently did not come to the first party council, which the party always keeps behind closed doors, after the elections. The party would, however, investigate another election defeat. Based on this, Marijnissen’s position could still be brought into question. But the daughter of former party leader Jan Marijnissen is now fleeing, whether forced or not.

It is still unclear who will succeed Marijnissen. A spokesperson for the party says that Marijnissen will say goodbye to the House of Representatives on Tuesday. The faction will probably quickly appoint a new leader, who will also have to conduct the debate on the exploration on Wednesday.
