Olivia Rodrigo was a musical guest for the third time Saturday Night Live. She performed two songs from her upcoming album “You Seem Pretty Sad for a Girl So in Love.”

Rodrigo, who previously appeared on the late-night show in 2021 and 2023, opened her performance with “Drop Dead.” She co-wrote the song with Amy Allen and her longtime producer/co-songwriter Dan Nigro.

The 22-year-old singer-songwriter, who also made her debut as an SNL host this Saturday, has announced that “You Seem Pretty Sad for a Girl So in Love” will consist primarily of “sad love songs.”

Joy with an aftertaste

“I realized that my favorite romantic love songs were so beautiful because they had a hint of fear or longing in them,” she told British Vogue last month.

“It was a creative challenge to write from a place of joy,” she explained. “When you feel like you’re really connected to someone or feel good about yourself, you don’t sit there and ponder bittersweet poems!”

The album – Rodrigo’s third after “Guts” (2023) and “Sour” (2021) – will be released on June 12th. As with its predecessors, Nigro takes over the production.

Weyes Blood as support

Rodrigo presented the world premiere of “Begged” as the second song of the evening. The backing vocals were provided by Weyes Blood, the Los Angeles-based singer-songwriter who is currently working on a new album.

Rodrigo’s 65-show Unraveled Tour in support of the new album kicks off in September in Hartford, Connecticut. The North American part ends in February in Brooklyn, then it goes to Europe – concluding in Barcelona at the beginning of May.
