World Cup dress rehearsal without podium places for the German ski crossers. Johanna Holzmann and Florian Wilmsmann at least made it into the “small final”. The victories went to Sweden and Switzerland.

The German ski crossers Johanna Holzmann and Florian Wilmsmann just missed out on the podium at the World Cup on the Reiteralm in Austria on Friday (02/17/2023). The two were eliminated in their semifinals a week before the World Cup in Georgia. In the “small final” Holzmann finally came second and celebrated the best World Cup result of her career in sixth place overall. In his “small final”, Wilmsmann drove confidently to victory and, like on Thursday, finished fifth.

In the quarter-finals, Holzmann managed a real coup in second place. The German prevailed against Andrea Limbacher from Austria. Wilmsmann celebrated start-finish victories in the round of 16 and quarter-finals, but was only just third in the semi-finals. In the “small final” he was fastest again and was annoyed at the finish that he just missed out on the podium in the ninth race of the season.

Naeslund and Lenherr win

In the women’s category, high-flyer Sandra Naeslund from Sweden won ahead of Sonja Gigler (Austria) and Jole Galli (Italy). For dominator Naeslund it was already the 17th World Cup victory in a row and the 37th success of her career. In the men’s race, victory went to Jonas Lenherr from Switzerland ahead of Briton Oliver Davies and Tyler Wallasch (USA). Top favorite David Moaberg from Sweden fell on the first lap and only finished fourth. Lenherr raced to the fifth World Cup victory of his career.

Maier disappointed, Hronek unhappy

Daniela Maier did not get a good World Cup dress rehearsal. For the first time this season, she was eliminated in a quarterfinal. Maier already slept through the start and was unable to make up for the deficit she had suffered in the upper part of the track in her race to catch up in the lower part of the track. On Thursday (February 16, 2023), the woman from Urach finished third. This season, Maier also made it onto the podium in Val Thorens, Arosa and Idre Fjäll.

Tim Hronek was unlucky in his quarter-finals: while in second place, he fell heavily after an unfair use of his arm by Frenchman Youri Duplessis Kergomard. The 27-year-old was completely knocked out, and he got a bloody nose when he fell. Duplessis Kergomard was disqualified for the action, but Austrian Robert Winkler, who finished third, benefited from this, Hronek was eliminated. Daniel Bochnacker also missed the leap into the semi-finals.

In the qualification for the final rounds, which took place on Wednesday (February 15, 2023), the German men Ferdinand Dorsch and Florian Fischer dropped out in 33rd and 35th place. Florian Wilmsmann, Tobias Müller, Niklas Bachsleitner and Daniel Bohnacker qualified for the round of 16 of the best 32 as third, 12th, 27th and 28th. No World Cup in Oberwiesenthal

In the coming week, the ski cross world championships will take place in Bakuriani, Georgia. After qualifying on Thursday, February 23rd, it’s time for the medals on Friday, February 24th and Saturday, February 25th.

The World Cup in Oberwiesenthal, on the other hand, had to be cancelled. The event planned for March 4th and 5th fell victim to the lack of snow and high temperatures in the Ore Mountains. “Unfortunately, the persistent spring-like temperatures, the announced rain for the coming weekend and the current snow situation have forced us to take this step‘ the organizer said on Friday. The World Cup in Germany’s highest town would have been the only one in Germany this winter. After the World Championships, ski crossers only have two World Cups left: from March 10th to 12th in Veysonnaz, Switzerland, and from March 16th to 18th in Craigleith, Canada.
