7 total tries, of which 4 in 12 minutes, partial 40-0 in the second half: this would be enough to explain the monstrous performance of Italy Under 20, who beat Scotland 47-14 in Treviso on the fourth day of the Six Nations category after having achieved a historic victory against world champions France two weeks ago in Beziers. Despite a very difficult first half, Italy went wild in the second half, turning the game around with impressive ease and winning another 5 points. The Azzurrini are now fourth on 10, with France third on 13 and Ireland second on 17. England lead on 18, and considering that on the last day there will be France-England, Italy can still dream of the second consecutive podium after last year’s. Next week the team led by Brunello will go to Wales to try to win their third victory in a row.

shock start

Everything seemed easy for Italy, leading after 7 minutes with Piero Gritti, then came the blackout which risked compromising Treviso’s evening with Jimenez having a kick blocked from the base and giving McVie the equalizing goal. The Azzurrini felt the pinch and were punished by 17-year-old Watson – one of Scotland’s best – who served from Gwynn too easily torched 3 opponents and scored 7-14. Italy struggled to respond, appeared surprisingly in difficulty and went into half-time trailing.

my goodness, what a second half!

In the second half we see Italy again, having beaten France and losing by just one point to reigning champion Ireland: Brunello’s team finds a dominant scrum, moves the ball at a speed that Scotland cannot handle and in the 50th minute he breaks down the Scottish wall. Piero Gritti surprises the Scottish defense by starting from the base of the group and finding the goal that is worth the draw and his personal double, then the usual Marco Scalabrin is unleashed – a real discovery of this Italian Six Nations – who puts the Scottish 22 to sword and fire and Gasperini’s goal in the 55th minute was auspicious. The Italian hooker repeats himself 4 minutes later, finalizing an advancing maul, then in the 62nd minute Belloni’s tackle makes it 33-14: 4 tries in 12 minutes. Scotland demolished. At this point Brunello’s team limits itself to managing and punishing any inattention by the Scots: Scalabrin and De Villiers score again to reach 7 tries. Pucciariello makes 6 out of 7 conversions and sets the final score at 47-14. At this point Italy can match both the podium of 2023 (which came with 2 successes) and the 3 victories of 2022: whatever happens, this team is playing an amazing Under 20 Six Nations.
