Six people were killed in a storming of the UN headquarters in the Democratic Republic of Congo on Monday. The rioters broke into the building in eastern Goma, destroying and steel furniture, until security guards pushed them back with tear gas and firearms.

Members of President Felix Tshisekedi’s party and civil society organizations had called for demonstrations outside the UN building housing the UN peacekeeping mission Monusco. Earlier this month, Monusco received a request from the Senate president to leave the country.

The observer mission has been active in the African country for about twenty years and is trying to restore peace. About 130 armed groups are active in the country, many of which want to exploit the country’s resources. Congo is rich in copper, gold and diamonds.
