Before the start of the final team race over an hour and 50 laps, four couples were on the same lap. These were Hesters/Havik, Van den Bossche/De Vylder, De Buyst/Viviani and the Germans Roger Kluge and Tim Tom Teutenberg. European champions Yanne Dorenbos and Vincent Hoppezak followed one lap.
These top teams made it very difficult for each other with attacks that followed one after the other. De Buyst and Viviani scored a double 23 minutes and 50 laps before the end and the other couples had to get back to work. Hesters started the final and went for a triplet, but Van den Bossche countered. Going into the last 50 laps, there were still four teams in the same lap. Ultimately, Van den Bossche and De Vylder managed to take another lap in the last seventeen laps and thus take the lead.
Van den Bossche and De Vylder follow Hesters and Benjamin Thomas on the honors list of the Ghent six-day event. The Belgian-French duo kept de Vylder and Robbe Ghys from their third consecutive overall victory in ‘t Kuipke last year.
