Sinterklaas campaign in Assen helps 400 children from low-income families, more than ever

Just a little while and Sinterklaas will arrive in Drenthe again. Many children look forward to this, but not every family has money for presents. That is why they collect toys at the Social Shop in Assen, to give as many children as possible a nice party.

Cupboards and racks full of toys, clothes and books can be found at the Social Shop in Assen. They are intended for children whose parents do not have that much money. “These gifts were brought in by residents of Assen. If you still have good stuff at home, you can bring it in. We then give it to children who can use it,” explains Tirza van Brakel-Engberts of the Sociale Winkel.

The action is being held for the nineteenth time and this year it is bigger than ever because of the increasing poverty. Els Timmerman of Humanitas in Assen also sees it becoming busier in the store. “Especially now, because everything is becoming more expensive. Especially with energy prices. Parents have to choose between feeding their child or a gift,” she says. “It’s great that we can support and relieve those people with this action.”

The goal is to help a total of 400 children. If you want to donate something, you can contribute financially or bring toys that are in good condition. In addition to toys, school and craft supplies and care products are also more than welcome. “We can even take children’s wish lists into account. When registering, we ask the parents what their children want and then we try to find out,” says Van Brakel-Engberts.

Toys must be as good as new to be used. The items that are not suitable will be given to other organizations. “It must be intact and look neat. Not dated and coloured. It must be something that you can give as a gift,” says Van Brakel-Engberts.
