Two blue helmets injured in angry mob attack on UN convoy in Congo | Abroad

Two blue helmets were injured in the east of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) on Tuesday evening. That happened when a United Nations convoy was attacked by an angry mob. This is reported by local sources and the UN.

Things went awry when Monusco’s convoy (the UN force in the DRC) arrived on the outskirts of Goma, the capital of North Kivu province. Thousands of displaced people had arrived in recent days, fleeing the recent fighting between the Congolese army and M23 rebels. Now, however, stones were thrown. At least one vehicle was also set on fire.

“Two blue helmets were injured in a skirmish,” said a Monusco representative. The convoy was able to continue on its way after firing a few warning shots.

incompetent

The convoy reportedly came to a halt as the military attempted to search the vehicles for their contents. The mob then began attacking the blue helmets, a civil society officer said.

The UN peacekeepers, who have been active in the DRC for more than 20 years, have been accused of incompetence in combat for several months. Armed groups have been terrorizing eastern Congo for nearly three decades.
