In Assen there is a problem before Sinterklaas arrives. Parcel thieves on jet skis try to steal the presents from the parcel boat. But before Sinterklaas sets foot ashore, the two ‘crooks’ are arrested. In the end, agents find a total of seven ‘crooks’, all of whom are locked up. Sinterklaas and his helpers hardly noticed. They are protected, says the Bootpiet. “We noticed it a little bit at the end. Then they started circling the boat with jet skis. That’s when we noticed it, but on the boat it was kept a secret from us.”
It’s a big party for the kids. Not only do they gather at the Kop van de Vaart, but they are anxiously waiting all over Assen for the saintly man and his helpers. Along the Vaart and through the center you will see little Piets and Sinterklaas everywhere who hope to catch a glimpse of the procession that traveled from Spain to the Netherlands. The children are most looking forward to the presents and gingerbread cookies.
