Sinner is increasingly making history: he is number 1 in the Race and already has one foot in the Turin Finals

Another record for Jannik, new number 1 of the Race. No Italian has ever achieved this in this ranking which takes into consideration the results of the calendar year

Jannik Sinner is already number one. Still “only” from the Race, but it is still a historic result (this too): no Italian had ever been so high in this ranking after the first slam of the year. Furthermore, the South Tyrolean is practically already at the Finals in Turin, and it is only January.

2000 points

The winner of the Australian Open leads the Race with 2000 points, ahead of Daniil Medvedev and Alexander Zverev, with the German counting not only the points from the semi-final lost to the Russian but also the 500 points gained with the United Cup. Djokovic is only fourth, who is not used to being so far behind after the Melbourne tournament, an event he won more or less regularly every year. Two thousand points are a very heavy haul for the blue also in view of the Finals in Turin, but at this point that could already be a problem to be put aside.

with one foot in Turin

Why? Simple: the winner of a slam just needs to be among the top 20 to participate in the masters tournament. The best of all those who won one of the first four tournaments, if he was not among the top 8 qualified for the Masters at the end of the year, would take the place of the eighth placed. Sinner therefore already has one foot in Turin, also because he would have to score just over double the points already achieved to even have mathematical certainty or so, and with another 9 months available to do so it is really little more than a formality.

in the ranking

The goal is to climb the ATP ranking anyway. Sinner is still fourth in the rankings with 8310 points (no one in Italy had ever obtained so many ATP points), just 455 points from number three, Daniil Medvedev, the one he defeated in the final, and is only 1545 points from number one, Novak Djokovic: in short, the process of becoming the first Italian player to reach the top of the ATP rankings can be open. In the meantime, the Russian’s number 3 is within reach: let’s remember that no Italian has ever reached the top 3 of the ATP in his career and this objective could be achieved after the two 1000s between Indian Wells and Miami, which see Jannik as the natural favourite.
