Did you also have to blink a few times this morning on your way to work or school? The lonely tree between Oostweg and Edisonstraat has suddenly disappeared. While this special giant sequoia is the only one to have survived the large-scale felling of trees on this previously unspoilt piece of nature. What’s going on? Indebuurt will find out!

Don’t worry, the giant sequoia has been moved to a spot a little further away. According to the municipality, he stood in the way of the new construction plans in the future Edisonpark residential area.

Excavators

Mild panic broke out this week after green workers were working around the tree with an excavator. Not surprising, because after the enormous felling of trees at the beginning of this year, many Zoetermeer residents were very frightened. The only survivor is the stately sequoia that was allowed to remain standing because of its special characteristics. “It won’t happen, will it…?” Annet wrote in a disturbing message to the editors of the Zoetermeer neighborhood.

Get in the way

Despite its respectable age of 20 years, the municipality has put the mammoth in its place this week. It stood in the way of new construction in the Edison Park. About a year ago, tree specialists from the National Tree Bank ensured that the tree could form a root ball to loosen it in the ground before the move.

After the excavation work last Wednesday, they carefully placed the tree on a low loader using a crane. The driver crossed Edisonstraat and then placed it in its final position about a hundred meters away. The arborists have placed the mammoth firmly in the ground there. You can see the mammoth from the Zegwaardeweg and the Australiaweg.

Special copy

Even if the tree is perfectly healthy, moving it is never pleasant. “The tree specialists ensure that the tree can get used to its new location and take root firmly again,” says a municipal spokesperson. “November is also the best time because trees are then at rest and can tolerate a move better.” And good news for future residents, because hundreds of new trees will return to Edison Park.
