Because nothing was as usual this evening after the death of Eder last Wednesday. The first two games of the polar bears were moved out of consideration for their grief.
Despite the 14,200 spectators, it was oppressed long before the minute’s silence. Even before the game, instead of lively anticipation, unusual calm in front of the arena at the Ostbahnhof. Many fans take the opportunity to pause on a memorial set up on the outer wall for the died professional and take candles, scarves and flowers.
When the minute’s silence was over, a fan called “Tobi Eder” according to “Tobi Eder”, and the entire audience joined. All polar bear players also wore Eder’s number 22, once on the helmet, once on the jersey.
But with the start of the game it suddenly got loud in the hall. The polar bear team had wished for the full support of the fans to get the feeling of normality on the ice. When Ty Ronning took the lead for the Berliners after only 36 seconds, it was not the usual goal anthem of the polar bears, but “Viva La Vida” from Coldplay. It was Eder’s favorite song.
In the end, the Berliners won 2: 1 (1: 0, 1: 1, 0: 0) and thus strengthened their second place in the table. In addition to Ronning, Kai Wissmann (31st) scored for the hosts, Cole Maier scored the only goal of the Nuremberg (27th) in the power play.
