Siegemund loses Krimi against Badosa

Tennis pro Laura Siegemund was eliminated in the second round of the Miami Open. The 35-year-old from Metzingen failed at the $8.8 million WTA tournament 6: 7 (2: 7), 6: 4, 2: 6 to the Spaniard Paula Badosa. This means that the further women’s competition in South Florida will take place without German participation. Wimbledon semi-finalist Tatjana Maria, Jule Niemeier and Anna-Lena Friedsam were eliminated in the first round.

Qualifier Siegemund, who defeated Egypt’s Mayar Sherif in the first round, struggled to get into the game against 21st seed Badosa. After the first serve was lost, she still fought her way into the tie-break, in which the Spaniard found the better means.

In the second set, the German brought home an early 3-0 lead, but had to acknowledge the class of the former world number two in the final round. A one-minute treatment break by the DTB player didn’t change anything about the defeat.

However, Siegemund does not have to leave the Sunshine State yet, on Friday she will play with partner Wera Zwonarewa in doubles against the US duo Makenna Jones/Sloane Stephens. At the side of the Russian, Siegemund won the title at the US Open in 2020.
