Shutdown in the United States in the nick of time | Abroad

After the House of Representatives had previously approved the emergency budget, the Senate has now also approved. This is one last minute shutdown – government shutdown – averted in the United States.

Saturday was the last day of the fiscal year and therefore the last chance to prevent a shutdown. If not, part of the government would come to a standstill and some civil servants would no longer be able to be paid. Such a closure will affect important government programs for businesses and delay major infrastructure projects, Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen said earlier. But it didn’t come to that.

Reluctantly

Democrats, in the minority in the House, overwhelmingly supported the Republican chairman’s plan. No fewer than 209 of them were in favor, accompanied by 126 Republicans. Earlier, the hardliners in his party bothered the Republican Speaker of the House, Kevin McCarthy.

Aid for Ukraine, which is under attack by Russia, is not included in the draft. Ultimately, the Senate, where President Joe Biden’s Democrats have the majority, also voted in favor of the emergency budget. Now that it has been approved, Congress and the administration will have an additional 45 days to agree on a new budget. Now only President Joe Biden needs to sign the law.

Fire alarm

Jamaal Bowman, a member of the House of Representatives from the Democrats, sounded the fire alarm in the run-up to the vote on the emergency budget to avoid a shutdown. His chief of staff said it was an ‘accident’, although Republicans want to investigate.

Republicans believe Bowman set off the fire alarm to delay the vote. The Democrats had previously indicated that they had not had enough time to review the emergency budget. “This will not go unpunished. This is a disgrace,” McCarthy said.
