Shortage of teachers is increasing: lateral entrants are losing out on wage conditions in education, even with 10 years of seniority

The teacher shortage does not seem to have a solution yet. At the end of November, VDAB had 2,604 vacancies for secondary, nursery and primary education teachers. In the same period last year, there were only 2,099. To fill that gap, the Flemish government is fully committed to lateral entrants, people from the private sector. Those lateral entrants are also allowed to take 10 years of seniority with them, but are still put off by the wage conditions in education.
