Chaos at the battle rehearsals: Shirin David gets loud
On the evening of October 23rd, the first talents from “The Voice of Germany” competed against each other in their battles. But not all candidates seemed to take the challenge seriously. Igor and Joelisa from the glamor rapper’s team were supposed to rehearse “Creep”.
Actually, nothing would have stood in the way of a successful rehearsal – both had won several buzzers in their blind auditions. However, while Igor thought the song wouldn’t be a problem even if it wasn’t rehearsed, Joelisa suspected that the performance could become a challenge. In fact, the rehearsals ultimately turned out to be a failure.
The duo missed missions and couldn’t find access to the song – much to their coach’s annoyance. David got angry and loud: “And so you want to go into battle? Where I come from, people work their asses off!” What their talents were doing was a no-go for them. Other participants would have been kicked out with such an attitude, she said, and predicted to the two that they would be overtaken with this performance. “But you’re too talented, or what? I don’t expect top performance in the first coaching session. But I expect you to be up for it!”, she added. Her devastating interim conclusion: “Absolutely dead energy. I felt nothing.”
Despite a false start: Duo impresses in the show
Despite the botched rehearsal, David’s announcement seemed to awaken the fighting spirit in Igor and Joelisa. The duo was surprisingly convincing during their performance on the show, where, in addition to the four jurors, Joy Denalane also chose “Battle of the Night” for the first time.
“You’ve worked on yourself,” praised rap queen David and went into raptures: “Joelisa, you’re simply amazing! I always say: unique voices! That was really a great performance!” The rapper thought Joelisa was “one of a kind”. Joy Denalane enthusiastically agreed, declaring Joelisa a “voice of the century.”
But Igor was also able to convince: “You’re a great R’n’B singer!” praised the Fanta team. Rea Garvey, who had witnessed the chaotic rehearsals, was perplexed: “I thought: Fuck, where is this going? But this performance – did you give them something to drink or something? You stood up and made it happen!”
At the end of the evening, the tension was worth it: Joelisa and Igor both made it to the next round, and guest judge Joy Denalane named their performance of “Creep” the best of the evening.
