Arsenal are unplayable. For Sheffield United, bottom of the Premier League (as well as the worst attack and worst defence) overwhelmed 6-0 at Bramall Lane, with the home fans starting to leave before the quarter of an hour of the first half, when the Gunners were already ahead by 3 goals. And for all the teams that the Gunners have faced lately, given that the one against the Blades was the 7th consecutive championship success for Arteta’s team, with 31 goals scored and just 3 conceded, good to get back in Liverpool’s wake and Manchester City and aim to become league leaders on Saturday (beating Brentford at home) while waiting for the two rivals to challenge each other at Anfield on Sunday. However, over Arsenal’s triumph there is a black cloud that threatens a disastrous downpour: Gabriel Martinelli’s injury.

ko

The Brazilian was fantastic in the hour he was on the pitch, making it 1-0 after 5′ and making it 3-0 in the 15th minute. In the 64th minute, however, he received a blow to the right ankle from Blades captain Ahmedhodzic and never got up again. Or rather, he did it to hop off the field, helped by two paramedics, without being able to rest his ankle on the ground. Arteta was about to replace him, as the Gunners were already 6-0 up, but he had to watch one of his arrows go off the field in those conditions. The tests will tell how serious the injury is, but Martinelli is one of those players who contribute to making Arsenal irresistible and his prolonged absence in the most important phase of the season would be a problem.

the keys

Luckily for him, Arteta has many others that make Arsenal irresistible. At Bramall Lane we saw the enormous difference between a team aiming for the title and one that has just arrived from the Championship (and with 13 points after 27 games probably destined to return): the Gunners attacked immediately, they gorged on goals and lost also the heads of their opponents, they reached the break at 5-0 with 4 different scorers (the momentary 2-0 was an own goal) and in the second half they were “satisfied” with closing the set with the sixth goal. Arteta, who once again put Jorginho in charge of the game and heads in front of the defense, has the best players who are reaching peak condition just when he counts most. And he intends to continue asking him to improve, to rise to the level needed to fight all the way for the title.

the match

In the first 5′ Arsenal hit the crossbar with Saka and found the opening goal with Odegaard, who collected Martinelli’s assist from close range. Before the quarter of an hour, the Gunners were already 3-0, with an own goal from Bogle first and a goal from Martinelli then making the difference between the two teams an abyss. Bramall Lane was already emptying when in the 25th minute Havertz made it 4-0 and before the break Arsenal also gave themselves their fifth goal, scored by Rice. Arteta starts again with Vieira in place of Saka, the hosts change three more players after the substitution made in the 17th minute, but the music doesn’t change: White receives the ball from Havertz in the 56th minute and scores the 6-0. Shortly after, Martinelli’s injury ruined the party even though the victory remained, equaling the record for Arsenal’s largest success in the Premier League.
