Qwhat was supposed to be a peaceful afternoon of snorkeling in the crystal clear waters of Fernando de Noronhain Brazil, turned into an instant of pure terror for Tayane Cachoeira Dalazen. The 36-year-old lawyer, originally from Sao Paulo, was in apnea when she was attacked by a nurse shark. A video, which quickly went viral, shows the predator swimming around the woman before pounce on his quadricepsdragging it towards the seabed. All under the incredulous eyes of a friend and a local guide.

The shark incident: the testimony

«I knew I had been bitten, I felt the animal shaking my leg», the woman said in an interview at CNN Brazil. Despite the pain, Tayane didn’t panic: she only managed to free herself thanks to the timely intervention by the guidewho had to hit the shark to make it let go. Once on shore, first aid was provided by a dermatologist friend who cleaned the wound before being transported to hospital. The accident has raised strong controversy over the management of tourism in the protected area. The Chico Mendes Institute for Biodiversity Conservation (ICMBio) has opened an investigation. The Brazilian body must verify whether the animal was driven to aggression by illegal practice of artificial feedingused to attract sharks for the benefit of tourists. Tayane Cachoeira Dalazen herself, as an expert surfer, wanted to send a message of awareness: «I don’t blame the shark, it was me in its habitat»suggesting that the specimen may have been stressed by inappropriate human interactions.
