Several Russian missiles bring death to the Kharkov metro

The impact in the center of Kharkivthe second largest city in Ukraineof various russian missiles This Thursday caused at least five deaths and 10 injuries. One of the deceased is Elena’s husband, who found his body when entering the meter.

The impacts occurred around three in the afternoon local time at points such as the 23 Serpina metro station in Kharkov, whose metropolitan area had about two million inhabitants before the war, although many were evacuated.

Elena, 64, had called her husband because when she left work she saw that she had forgotten her house keys.

“We can’t bring him back to life”

The woman told Efe that she heard the first of the missiles when she was going to the stationwhere she had met her husband, Oleksiy, 65.

As he approached the subway, he found a wounded man and tried to help him, with a bag of gauze and other first aid supplies that some neighbors threw at him in a bag from a building.

Then he heard another explosion, but when she called her husband again, he did not answer. When she entered the station, she found her body and burst into tears, until she was escorted downstairs by a policeman while comforting her.

It had been 10 minutes since I had spoken to him on the mobile phone and “now no one can bring him back to life“, she lamented while being attended by emergency service personnel.

Yegor, a man who witnessed the scene, told Efe that when he was going up the stairs of the station he saw a man coming in, an explosion was heard, a piece of a projectile entered through the window and hit him.

He told two police officers nearby that there was an injured person and they tried to help him, but it was not possible to save his life. He was Elena’s husband.

Crying and nerves

Outside, between one explosion and another, as at least two missiles fell next to the station, a group of policemen and a couple of women helped a wounded soldier, who was bleeding from one leg.

When the second of the missiles exploded nearby, a ambulancewho was able to evacuate him amid the smoke from burning vehicles in the subway car park.

The policemen and the women then took refuge in the Undergroundwhere three wounded were attended by other agents and by people who were in the subway.

Most had taken refuge in the platformsas deep as possible, while they treated the wounded as best they could until the ambulances arrived and evacuated them.

Many of those who encountered the scene could not help but crying nor the nerves, until little by little the station was recovering a certain calm, between traces of blood and broken glass.
