Seven bodyguards shield Gahan and Gore

Both can apparently be very intrusive: Corona – and fans at the airport. Two videos in a Depeche Mode fan group on Facebook document Depeche Mode’s arrival in Mexico City, where the band will celebrate the start of their fall tour on the American continent on Friday (September 22, 2023).

The two clips show Dave Gahan and Martin Gore arriving. Gore is wearing a breathing mask, Gahan is surrounded by seven bodyguards who demonstrate a type of personal protection that is not seen too often: holding hands, they form a circle around the DM singer who is running quickly through the hangar. “Say a word to Mexico!” asks a paparazzo, but Gahan probably has other things on his mind after a long flight – after all, there’s a concert coming up soon. The videos are available here.

The gig there as part of the “Memento Mori” tour will be the first since March 13, 2018, when the British played in the Mexican capital during their “Global Spirit” concert tour.

The “Boxscore” list for July 2023 published by “Billboard” magazine shows the world’s most profitable tours and individual concerts. There are also two placements from Germany at number 13 and 25 (out of 30). Not from Rammstein, as you might think, but: Depeche Mode and Harry Styles.

According to Boxscore, the two Depeche Mode concerts at Berlin’s Olympic Stadium generated ticket revenue of $14.5 million (around $13.5 million). The total number of spectators is said to have been 142,000 people. Harry Styles’ double shows in Frankfurt’s Deutsche Bank Park generated 9.9 million dollars (around 9.1 million euros) in ticket money, distributed among a total of 91,000 visitors.

For comparison: The frontrunner is Beyoncé, who is said to have achieved 33.1 million dollars (around 30.7 million euros) in ticket revenue from two gigs at the MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford (New Jersey), with a total audience of 106,000. Beyoncé appears seven times on the list, followed by Coldplay and The Weeknd with four mentions each.

In the “Top Venues” list, which shows the most profitable venues, the Berlin Olympic Stadium is in fourth place. In July, the stadium recorded revenue of $29.1 million (around €26.9 million) and attracted 284,000 paying people. Soldier Field in Chicago takes first place, followed by MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, and right before Berlin is the Johan Cruyff Arena in Amsterdam.

The most interesting is the “Top Tours” list, i.e. the cumulative number of all tour receipts in July:

01. Beyonce with 127.6 million dollars and 503,000 viewers at 11 concerts

02. The Weeknd with 85.7 million dollars and 891,000 viewers at 15 concerts

03. Coldplay ($83.8 million, 678,000 people, 12 concerts)

04. Depeche Mode ($65.9 million, 707,000 people, 14 concerts)

The numbers for Depeche Mode and Coldplay are also so impressive because both bands only toured Europe this summer, not the USA.
