Threats
The Bruges department of the West Flanders public prosecutor’s office sent a fire expert to the scene to investigate the precise circumstances. According to the expert’s initial findings, someone must have deliberately set the garbage bag on fire. In that context, the police were quickly able to arrest a 20-year-old man as a suspect. According to the victims, Dylan D. had been threatening them for some time. After questioning, the Bruges investigating judge arrested him on suspicion of intentional arson. The Bruges council chamber ruled on Tuesday morning that the suspect must remain in prison for at least a month longer.
Not ready for a test piece
In the summer of 2024, Dylan D. received a suspended five-year prison sentence, linked to conditions, for extortion and inhumane treatment. Later, the young man was also sentenced to 100 hours of community service for two thefts, one of which involved violence. D. stated that he committed those crimes because he wanted to end up in prison.
In the meantime, the Blankenberge/Zuienkerke police zone has also arrested a second suspect on behalf of the investigating judge. The 50-year-old man was arrested on Monday around 6 p.m. If he were also arrested, the suspect would have to appear before the Bruges council chamber on Friday.
