Second stage victory Carapaz in Vuelta, leader Evenepoel loses time

Richard Carapaz has booked his second stage win in three days in the Vuelta a España. The cyclist from Ecuador was the strongest in the fourteenth stage, a mountain stage over more than 160 kilometers with the finish on the Sierra de la Pandera. Classification leader Remco Evenepoel lost time on his competitors for the overall victory for the first time, but the Belgian kept the red jersey.

Carapaz was part of a leading group of ten riders that had formed early in the stage. The rider of Ineos Grenadiers, who won Olympic gold in Japan last year in the road race, already won the twelfth stage on Thursday. Carapaz was then also the best in an uphill finish. Wilco Kelderman finished second in that stage.

Primoz Roglic, winner of the Vuelta for the past three years, opened the attack on Evenepoel on Saturday about 4 kilometers from the finish. The wearer of the leader’s jersey had to let the Slovenian go. Roglic finished third 8 seconds behind Carapaz and took just under a minute off his gap on the Belgian in the standings.
