Schmidt’s belief in the “impossible” in Munich

Frank Schmidt once shocked the great FC Bayern with TSV Vestenbergsgreuth and annoyed them with 1. FC Heidenheim – but these “old camels” should no longer play a role when they meet again in Munich.

“That’s history, that won’t help us much,” said the 1. FCH coach before the promoted team’s game against the record champions on Saturday (3:30 p.m.).

“I like to remember the 1-0 win with Vestenbergsgreuth against Bayern,” said Schmidt about the mother of all sensations in 1994, “that was a cup moment that you won’t forget, something very special. But I don’t bore my team with that .” They want to “hear what our plan looks like and how we can annoy Bayern.”

Heidenheim coach was a former Bayern fan

Like in April 2019, when the then second division team only had to admit defeat 4:5 in the cup thanks to a late goal from Robert Lewandowski. Or, Mr. Schmidt?

“It’s been four and a half years, we’re not unpacking this box. It would also be strange if my team needed this impulse to believe in themselves,” emphasized the 49-year-old: “We want to try the impossible in order to achieve the possible to reach.”

Schmidt has no illusions about the difficulty of the task. “This is the ultimate team,” he said, recalling that table neighbors Bochum and Darmstadt each lost 8-0 in Munich.

“We have to do what we do 100 percent, otherwise you have no chance and then FC Bayern can overwhelm you.” However, he doesn’t want to take a backseat. “Caution always has something to do with fear – and we don’t know fear.” Instead, Schmidt wants to stick to his idea “and implement it with discipline and enthusiasm.”

But he can’t completely escape the magic of the game. Schmidt said he was a Bayern fan as a child, “that as a coach I can play for points in the Allianz Arena is unbelievable.”
