Schalke confirms: Simon Terodde will leave S04 at the end of the season

Focus on relegation battle

Simon Terodde will leave FC Schalke 04 when his contract expires at the end of the season. The Royal Blues confirmed this on Wednesday. The striker switched from HSV to the “Knappen” in 2021, for whom he has scored 33 goals in 59 games to date. With 30 goals, Terodde played a major part in the direct return to the top flight as the top scorer last season, and he also overtook Dieter Schatzschneider in the all-time list of top scorers in the 2nd division

Terodde informed sports director Peter Knäbel about his decision on Tuesday “in a personal and trusting conversation”. It is a common wish to be able to focus fully on the fight for relegation for the rest of the season through early communication.

“In the past few weeks, there has been a lot of media speculation about my future. This is a topic that neither the club nor I need in these trend-setting weeks. So I’d like to say right now that my time at Schalke will definitely come to an end in the summer. My time here was incredibly emotional, characterized by an incredible number of intense moments that I will remember forever. Now I would like to write my last chapter at Schalke with my team-mates – and ultimately say goodbye with the successful relegation,” said Terodde.

Knäbel added: “Everyone knows about my special relationship with Simon Terodde. In 2021, in a very difficult situation, he made his commitment to Schalke 04 and the mission to get promoted again, when hardly anyone believed in it. And then, just over a year later, to celebrate his return to the Bundesliga as the record goalscorer in the 2nd Bundesliga and to become part of the long club history of FC Schalke 04.” The early communication proves once again “what an impressive athlete and person he is. To take this step now in order to be free and absolutely focused in the last few weeks of the season – certainly not many people do that. Simon is very important to our team and I’m sure he will do everything to say goodbye to Schalke 04 as a Bundesliga club.”
