The SCM prevails in the German final against the capital club. It is already the third triumph for the team from Saxony-Anhalt.

Rained on Europe’s handball throne: SC Magdeburg has won the Champions League and prevented the next historical triumph of the rival Foxes Berlin with remarkable cold snap. The team of coach Bennet Wiegert disenchanted the German champion around world handball player Mathias Gidsel in the final of Cologne through a 32:26 (16:12) and secured the European crown for the third time after 2002 and 2023.

In the first royal class final of two Bundesliga clubs in eleven years, Gisli Kristjansson (8 goals) was the best thrower for the Magdeburgers. In front of 20,074 spectators in the Lanxess Arena, the runner -up was hardly able to make any mistakes on Sunday and, above all, did not allow the notorious offensive of the Berliners to develop. Even a red card against Gidsel-Guard Antonio Serradilla Cuenca (34th) did not get the Magdeburgers and their strong goalkeeper Sergey Hernandez off their way.

“This June 15th is a historical day for German handball,” said DHB President Andreas Michelmann: “I congratulate both teams that they have made a fantastic contribution.” The triumph of the SCM is “impressive, since coach Bennet Wiegert and his team steadfastly hold on their way despite all adversities.”

Coach Wiegert was there as a player 23 years ago and now got his second CL title as a coach within three years. For the foxes, however, the first defeat has been hoped for the hope of the second premiere title within eight days. In the previous week, the capital club had brought the German championship for the first time in its club history and referred the Magdeburgers to second place.

Now the SCM, who had conquered the defending champion and record winner FC Barcelona (31:30) in a gripping semi -finals on Saturday, revenge on the European stage and ended a season full of resistance with the happy ending. For the ninth time since the introduction of the competition 32 years ago, the winner comes from the Bundesliga.

On a “festive day for German handball” (Wiegert), the SCM developed advantages after a driving initial phase. Wiegert’s team set a stable defensive and initially managed to cold Gidsel. The team from Saxony-Anhalt was increasingly reducing its error rate with increasing playing time.

Unlike in the clear semi -finals against the HBC Nantes (34:24), when Gidsel had seen the red card early, this time hardly rely on her goalkeeper Dejan Milosavljev. After about 20 minutes without parade, Siewert exchanged the Serbian goalkeeper against Youngster Lasse Ludwig. Initially without effect.

The SCM got going better and better. At 15:11 (26th), the lead grew to four goals for the first time to four goals. Berlin seemed to be lacking the ideas. In addition, SCM goalkeeper Sergey Hernandez is now defusing more and more balls.

After the break, not least due to the dismissal against Serradilla, who had previously defended greatly against Gidsel, but caught Mijajlo Marsenic on his face during a defense campaign. The game now had more speed. Gidsel scored twice and was now better in the game, but the SCM stayed on the gas and even took the lead at 23:17 (43rd) by Lukas Mertens. Above all, the Berliners made too many mistakes offensive.
