SC Magdeburg has consolidated its lead in the handball Bundesliga. The Champions League winner won 30:25 (14:14) at ThSV Eisenach on Saturday after an increase in performance and extended the lead over pursuers SG Flensburg-Handewitt to five points before the European Championship break. The North Germans had a 36:29 home win against Bergischer HC on Friday.
After an incredible 23 competitive game wins in a row, the Magdeburg team lost ground again for the first time on Tuesday against record champions THW Kiel (22:22) – and the title favorites also had a hard time in Eisenach for a long time. The passionate ThSV earned a 14:14 at the break.
After the break, Magdeburg, led by Icelander Omar Ingi Magnusson, turned things around – and pulled away decisively in the middle of the second half. Magnusson and Matthias Musche were the SCM’s best throwers and ended up with seven goals each.
Champion Füchse Berlin is in fourth place, six points behind Magdeburg. The Berliners, who had announced contract extensions with homegrown players Nils Lichtlein, Matthes Langhoff, Tim Freihöfer and Lasse Ludwig before the game, defeated FA Göppingen 42:29 (17:17) after a furious second half.
Meanwhile, VfL Gummersbach stayed on course for the international places and defeated HSV Hamburg 33:27 (15:14). National player Miro Schluroff impressed Gummersbach with eight goals.
