SC Magdeburg also wins a cracker at THW Kiel

The handball players from SC Magdeburg made a successful start to the home European Championships and celebrated a convincing victory in the top game at THW Kiel.

The Champions League winner dominated the champions 33:26 (15:13), Magdeburg maintained its lead in the Bundesliga. For the THW, however, defending its title is becoming a long way off. Filip Jicha’s team is fifth and is already eight points behind the SCM.

Primus Magdeburg celebrated its next convincing victory on the Kiel Fjord. Just three days after reaching the Final Four of the DHB Cup with a sweeping victory over defending champion Rhein-Neckar Löwen (34:24), Bennet Wiegert’s team gave the record champions no chance.

“As a team, we showed in this hall that the last few games were not a flash in the pan,” said Magdeburg’s top scorer Tim Hornke after the game on “Dyn”. “We had a tough away game that we actually dominated from the start,” said Hornke, who contributed eight goals to the win. The German European Championship participant Lukas Mertens was also successful six times.

After a brief period of weakness at the start of the game, Magdeburg had already opened up a seven-goal lead midway through the first half. The THW weakened itself in this phase with a red card for star player Domagoj Duvnjak.

At halftime the Zebras were able to reduce the score to two goals, but they couldn’t get any closer.

TSV Hannover-Burgdorf is five points behind Kiel. The warriors beat VfL Gummersbach 32:29 (14:15). HSG Wetzlar fought for a 31:30 (13:15) victory against relegation candidate ThSV Eisenach and, in seventh place, also remains within striking distance of THW. Frisch Auf Göppingen and TVB Stuttgart separated 25:25 (11:12).
