Fifty years later (it was January 1976) Rai re-proposes Sandokan’s exploitsone of the heroes who has populated the imagination of several generations. The particularly ambitious operation was born from Luca Bernabei’s Lux Vide, which for the occasion put in place an international co-production aimed at relaunching the glories of a blockbuster at the time directed by Sergio Sollima.

One of Emilio Salgari’s masterpieces lives again today with the interpretation of Can YamanTurkish actor known above all for soap operas, who lends his face to the “Malaysian tiger” (the comparison with the original Kabir Bedi is inevitable).

Sandokan is a pirate who together with his trusted friend Yanez de Gomera (Alessandro Preziosi) moves between the seas and forests of nineteenth-century Borneo. His life changes when, during a raid on the island of Labuan, home of the British consulate, falls in love with the consul’s daughter, the beautiful Marianna Guillonk (Alanah Bloor)or “the pearl of Labuan”.

The Sandokan third millennium version appears too unbalanced towards psychological research which in the epic tale is often lateral: the merit of having re-proposed the myth of the Salgarian universe must be acknowledged.
