18 years old Saana Pöyhtäri will celebrate his high school graduation on June 3. He is looking forward to graduation and the celebration day.

– It’s nice to celebrate with loved ones, he says happily.

One of the most important aspects of prom day was finding the perfect outfit. It was a matter of course for Saana from the beginning to get second-hand school clothes. He buys his clothes mostly used or makes them himself. Ecology is important to him, but there is another reason for acting this way.

– I think that way you get a more personal style, he sums up.

“By doing it myself, I got exactly the outfit I wanted”

Saana wanted to make a dress for graduation day herself. The inspiration took a while to find, but it came when he found a wonderful lace fabric at a grocer. The price of this lace fabric was about a couple of euros.

– I tried to find a suitable fabric for the petticoat at the thrift store, but I couldn’t find it, so I bought the fabric from a fabric store.

The petticoat fabric cost about 30 euros. Once the fabrics were purchased, it was time to design a creation suitable for graduation day. The plan came about almost as if by itself. All that was needed was the right fabric.

After the idea, she prepared the patterns for the dress and then she sewed together the graduation day dream creation. Saana says that it took about a week to make the graduation dress.

– I am satisfied with the end result. By doing it myself, I got exactly the outfit I wanted.

He is also pleased that the graduation dress is of better quality in terms of its technical implementation compared to the first clothes he made.

– I have always been interested in fashion. I got excited about clothing design and thus sewing during high school. I learned the technical side with the help of YouTube videos, says Saana.

In fashion, one thing is above all others.

– I like fashion, because through it you can bring out your own personality.

The process of creating clothing design also inspires Saana. It probably won’t come as a surprise that this spring she has applied to study fashion design.

Most of the details of the student outfit were already found in Saana’s wardrobe. He has bought the shoes used before.

He wears a lot of rings in everyday life, so the same rings adorn his hands on graduation day as well.

– The earrings are my grandmother’s old ones, he adds.

Saana got to choose a graduation gift for herself from grandma’s old jewelry.

– They have sentimental value because they were a gift from grandma.

In addition to the fabric of the petticoat, the student’s cap has also been purchased new. I paid 40 euros for a new cap.

Saana bought a blazer at the flea market at the last minute, if it’s cold on the day of the party. This blazer cost six euros. Saana’s high school look cost 78 euros in total.

A real flower as a wonderful detail

Saana does the holiday makeup and hairdo herself. The makeup is quite similar to what she prefers in everyday life.

– The difference to everyday makeup is that I put green color on my eyes for parties. The inspiration came from the color of the ears and the blazer, says Saana.

She wanted a real flower for the party outfit, which would go well with the style of the lace. It was also important to Saana that the color of the flower harmonizes beautifully with the color of the dress.

– I wanted to keep the color scheme fairly neutral and understated, Saana says.

The color of the lipstick was determined to match the breast flower.

When it comes to party hairstyles, she relies on the classic look: Loose, curly hair always works.

“I hope the weather is beautiful”

The celebration day has been prepared together with the parents for a long time.

– We have tidied up the yard and planted summer flowers.

In addition to this, the house has been cleaned. The dishes come ready, so that the family can focus on other preparations.

– Hopefully the weather will be nice and we will be able to celebrate outside as well, Saana hopes happily.

Memo list for party etiquette

The president of the meeting club Mirva Saukkolan checklist for party etiquette:

1. Follow the dress code mentioned in the invitation.

2. If in doubt, dress slightly over rather than under.

3. However, trust your own style. If you are a colorful person, don’t choose colors that are foreign to you, such as dark or beige. Of course, the same also works the other way around.

4. Think about functionality. For example, evening bags are small so that you don’t accidentally bump other people in a crowd with your bag that is too big.

5. Also consider comfort. For example, high heels can be beautiful, but if you have to throw them in the corner at the end of the night and dance in your socks, they are not the right choice for the evening. The same goes for garden parties. It’s not particularly elegant to sink into the lawn.
