Canadian comedian and actor John Candy got laughs in films like Spaceballs, but his untimely death at 44 put a, well, sudden end to his career. “Deadpool” actor and producer Ryan Reynolds now wants to do his part to ensure that Candy is not forgotten. As Reynolds announced, he is working on a documentary about Candy.

“Because John Candy is trending on Twitter right now, I’ll just say I love him. So much so that Maximum Effort is working on a documentary about his life with Colin Hanks,” Reynolds wrote on Twitter. “Expect tears.” Maximum Effort is Reynolds’ own production company. A Reynolds representative told people.com that Candy’s family is giving Reynolds access to home video and other archive footage for the film.

Candy was born in 1950 in Newmarket, Ontario, Canada. For his acting career he went to the USA and became known there mainly for comedic roles. A wide audience got to know him above all with his role in the mermaid comedy “Splash – Eine Jungfrau am Haken” (1984) alongside Tom Hanks. In 1987 he played one of the leading roles in “A Ticket for Two” by John Hughes.

His supporting roles included The Blues Brothers (1980) and Home Alone (1990). He is also remembered by many as sidekick Waldi in the “Star Wars” parody “Spaceballs” (1987). Candy died of a heart attack in 1994 at the age of 44.
