Russia has reported the death of two senior Russian officers in eastern Ukraine. It is seen as remarkable that the Russians come forward with such information. Information about losses in Ukraine is treated with restraint.

The Russian Ministry of Defense reports that Colonels Vyacheslav Makarov and Yevgueni Brovko were killed in battle. Makarov is said to have been killed in fighting with Ukrainian troops around the town of Krasne, near the besieged city of Bachmut. Brovko is said to have died “heroically” elsewhere. He would have been hit by shrapnel.
It is unclear why the ministry is releasing information about the alleged deaths of the two commanders. Russia says Ukrainians have made frantic efforts in recent days to force a breakthrough at Bachmut. The ministry states that all attacks have been repelled. This has not been confirmed by independent sources.

A victory at Bachmoet is of great symbolic importance to both parties after months of bloody battle. The Russian mercenary army Wagner also participates in the fighting in the besieged city. The relationship between Wagner chief Yevgeny Prigozhin and the top of the Russian army is tense. Prigozhin has long complained that the armed forces are depriving his men of ammunition.
“More than ten Russian positions” taken
Ukraine declared on Sunday evening to have taken “more than ten Russian positions” in Bachmut. “Today, our units have captured more than ten enemy positions in the north and south of the Bachmut suburb,” Deputy Defense Minister Ganna Maliar told Telegram. The politician added that “fierce fighting” is still taking place in the devastated city. According to Maliar, enemy soldiers were also captured.
