The world chess federation Fide has banned Russia from its competitions for three years. Species association announced about it on their website.

In Fide’s press release, it is said that the background of the shelving is the Russian Chess Federation’s opposition to the ruling issued by the Court of Arbitration for Sport CAS in March.

The Ukrainian Chess Federation made a complaint to Fidel, according to which the Russian Chess Federation had organized its competitions in the territories occupied by the country’s army in Ukraine.

The CAS upheld the appeal in March, ordering Russia to withdraw competition events from the regions of Sevastopol, Crimea, Donetsk, Kherson, Luhansk and Zaporizhzhia within a 90-day deadline. The Russian Chess Federation had to prove to Fidel that the export had taken place during the deadline.

Russia did not comply with the order, and Fide banned the country from competitions.

In its press release, Fide emphasizes that the decision does not apply to competitors as individuals. Players who have turned 18 can still participate in tournaments organized by the sports association under a neutral flag.
