In the case of squad nomination for World Cup qualifications
DFB sports director Völler: “A few surprises”

The DFB selection in the World Cup qualification starts in early September. However, some key players are missing against Slovakia and Northern Ireland.
He would therefore “give a few surprises”. A year before the start of the 2026 World Cup, Nagelsmann wants to re-attack with the DFB team. But the start of qualification reveals well -known weaknesses. The national coach’s title for the title remains unbroken. A “golden cup” is still his goal.
After the disappointing home tournament in the Nations League with defeats against Portugal (1: 2) and France (0: 2) and fourth place, DFB sports director Rudi Völler also drew a sobering balance in the summer interview at Sky. Völler said that they had the feeling that “a few percent were missing”. Now it is important to find these hardness against themselves.
For Nagelsmann it was clear: the team needs a new structure – or at least one that has already proven itself. In his first step to prepare for the tournament in the United States, he announced that he will no longer be used as a full -back Joshua Kimmich in the future, but as with FC Bayern again in defensive midfield.
“Stand now he returns to the six because he is simply one of two or three players who will always play in his club,” said the 38-year-old. In the center in particular, Nagelsmann wants to have players with practical proof. You can’t “gambel”, that is, play. “We have to see that we have players who are in the rhythm in this position,” he said.
Nagelsmann is forced to other renovations by the prominent failures – and thus also to experiments. One, two or three? It is still speculated how many young professionals, for example, from the squad of the U21, which was unhappily conquered at the European Championship in the final of England, opens the World Cup door. “There are players who have pushed themselves out,” said Völler. “There are some there, I am convinced that you will see some of the A national team.”
