Rubber duck returns to Hong Kong, ‘but not alone’

To give Asia a nice feeling again after the corona pandemic, artist Florentijn Hofman is letting another rubber duck sail in the harbor of Hong Kong. But this time the duckling is not alone.

“They wanted good vibes again after corona, so they asked if I could let my rubber duck swim in the harbor again,” says the former resident of Noord-Sleen. “Initially I said it would be difficult because it was such a hit back then and you don’t know if that will happen again and if it will be as good as last time. You can’t keep repeating everything.”

In Seoul another rubber duck had been seen from his hand. Hong Kong had seen that and that’s why they wanted him too. After much consideration, Hofman did not want to touch it. “Not alone, no,” he says. “Now we come with two, under the motto ‘Double Duck, Double Luck’. Let’s hope that we will be free from pandemics in the coming years.”

In 2013, Hofman turned Hong Kong upside down with a rubber duck in the harbour. The duckling then went on an adventure all over the world, including Japan, New Zealand and Brazil, before ending up in Taiwan in 2013 after an explosion.
