On the last matchday of the 2012/13 season, SC Freiburg played participation in the Champions League in the home game against Schalke 04 (1: 2). Today’s SC coach Julian Schuster was not entirely uninvolved.
Starting position
Unlike in the current season, SC Freiburg was on the last matchday of the 2012/13 season in the fight for the Champions League. The SC took fifth place before the final matchday. FC Schalke 04 had one more point to offer in fourth place. The arithmetic game in relation to the entry into the premier class was very easy for the Freiburg: in the home game against the royal blue, a victory was needed.
The game
“Everything can, nothing has to be”. The Freiburg fans on a poster had given their SC on the way for this final to move into service class. Perhaps this attitude at the beginning of the game also nestled in the heads of the team of coach Christian Streich. The SC professionals acted agile, especially on the defensive. So it was Julian Draxler in the 20th minute of play, who was able to take the Schalke lead completely freely shortly before the penalty area. There was also no support from above, the Archbishop Robert Zollitsch, Freiburg, had come to the stadium for thumbs – the otherwise strong Freiburgers had to go into the half -time break with a 0-1 deficit.
Compensation & Slapstick owner
After a corner for Schalke, the Freiburgers were able to use a counterattack by Jonathan Schmid to 1-1 (54.). However, the joy of this compensation only took three minutes. Freiburg, actually just on the upper, brought himself back into falling behind through a slapstick owner. Immanuel Höhn shot SC captain Julian Schuster, from whose leg the ball rolled behind the line (57th). As a result, Schalke rocked the victory over time and thus secured fourth place in the table. “We played against Schalke 04 today and the opponent defended with ten men in his own half,” said Streich after the game.
No champions- for Europe League
SC Freiburg crowned a great season with fifth place and moving into the Europa League. The sports club moved into this competition for the third time after 1995 and 2001. Due to the victory of Meister FC Bayern Munich in the cup final against VfB Stuttgart, the Freiburg also came around the two play-off games and qualified directly for the Europa League. Maybe it will work with the Champions League 15 years later. This time in the role of the hunted.
