ROUNDUP: Israel attacks Damascus airport again

DAMASCUS (dpa-AFX) – According to Syria, the Israeli army has attacked Damascus airport again. Israeli missiles targeted the airport and targets near the capital, the Syrian state news agency Sana reported, citing military sources. The air defense repelled the rockets and destroyed most of them. There was damage at the airport.

The airport had not been operational for a month following previous attacks by Israel and only reopened on Saturday, the London-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said on Sunday. Israel bombed the runways again, which is why the airport had to close again. Explosions were also heard at the military airport in Damascus. As usual, Israel’s army did not comment on the reports.

Israel’s air force repeatedly bombs targets in neighboring Syria. Israel wants to prevent its arch-enemy Iran and its allied militias from expanding their military influence in Syria. Iran is one of Syria’s most important allies. Attacks have escalated since the Gaza war broke out. The observatory, which has been documenting the victims of the Syrian civil war since 2011, counted 55 attacks by Israel on targets in Syria this year, including 40 air strikes. They would have hit weapons depots, command centers and vehicles./jot/DP/men
