Roubaix, crashed and retired Peter Sagan: taken to hospital

The three-time Slovakian world champion crashed in the second stretch of paved road when there were 151 km to go to the finish line: about thirty riders on the ground, he’s in Cambrai for checks

It was his tenth and last participation in the Inferno del Nord, which he had conquered in 2018 in the world champion’s jersey by winning the two-man sprint with the Swiss Dillier. But Peter Sagan did not arrive at the Roubaix velodrome: the 33-year-old Slovakian from TotalEnergies was in fact taken to the hospital in Cambrai after a fall in which he was involved and which cost two of his companions, who are also two of his, to retire very faithful, the Trentino Daniel Oss and the Polish Bodnar.

the last of sagan

Sagan, who announced his withdrawal from the World Tour at the end of the season (he will try to qualify in mtb at the 2024 Paris Games), was as mentioned at his last Roubaix participation but fell about 151 kilometers from the finish, in the second of 29 sectors of pavé in the program, a stretch made slippery by the rain of the previous days (while today the weather is dry). In the sector between Viesly and Quievy, about thirty riders ended up on the ground: Sagan tumbled on the grass and immediately appeared in pain, with no possibility of continuing. There were several crashes in the first part of the Inferno del Nord (conducted at quite high speed, after the first hour the hourly average exceeded 51 km): our Davide Ballerini was among the withdrawn.
