The Asser culture lover also devoted himself to making the hiding hole in Orange visible again, which was dug by Bertho Dijk and Herman Kramer in the 1940s. The two boys from Orange were too young for the Arbeitseinsatz – the compulsory employment in Germany during the Second World War. By creating the hiding place, seven men, including the two older Van Dijk brothers, were able to escape compulsory labour.

In addition, Matien discovered a large comb field – remnants of prehistoric fields – near the Hijkerveld.
