The fact that Robert Smith is a romantic should have been known since “Friday, I’m In Love” (1992) at the latest. He already had the heart of his wife Mary Poole. In 1988 the two married – and the following year he wrote the hit “Lovesong” just for her. At a concert in Los Angeles, there was a rare public moment between the couple: Smith sang directly to his wife on the side of the stage on “Plainsong”, looking into her eyes. A concert-goer filmed the moment.
He wrote: “It was amazing to see someone in person who helped me deal with so many things when I was young and decades later. But then to see, knowing what a real person Robert Smith seems to be, then turning around and singing to his wife offstage was just amazing!”

Robert Smith and Mary Poole have been married for 45 years. They have known each other since high school when they were both members of the drama group at St Wilfrid Comprehensive School in England.
Smith dedicated numerous pieces to Pool. For example, “Just Like Heaven” also features Poole in the accompanying 1987 music video.
