Robert Gesink shines after his conquered red jersey in the Vuelta.

UTRECHT – The Vuelta party in Utrecht could not really go wrong, but Robert Gesink provided the highlight of the evening, and actually already this entire opening weekend in the Netherlands. The loyal Jumbo-Visma soldier withstood the burning pain in his legs to reach one of the highlights of his rich career just under 25 minutes later. There was enough margin left in the team time trial to send Gesink over the line first, and thus capture the first red leader’s jersey. “I never expected this. I’m still shaking,” he beamed.
