The 1. FC Köln was dealing with Mainz 05 for the Bundesliga comeback. And the self -proclaimed carnival club became an intensive game.
The 1. FC Köln won the first game in the new season. In a close game, the promoted player won the winning goal in the 90th minute at FSV Mainz 05. Newcomer Marius Bülter. Previously, the Mainz U21 international Paul Nebel had seen the red card. The host has played tenth since the 60th minute.
However, the Cologne team still had to accept bad news: In added time, substitute striker Ragnar Ache had to get off the pitch with a knee injury. In the first round, the newcomer to Mainz had already injured Benedict Hollerbach.
The first Bundesliga game after 463 days will “a fight that we will accept”, announced Lukas Kwasniok, coaching in the FC home jersey: “We drive to Mainz as an underdog. We don’t have to make ourselves smaller than we are, but Mainz is two years ahead of us.” He expects more 4,500 fans who traveled with “a Herculean task”. And this was confirmed in the initial phase, Mainz did a lot of operation and employed the Cologneers on the defensive.
After the flank of Philipp Mwene there was a double chance in the center for fog and Anthony Caci, but both times the Cologne team brought a leg in between (2nd). After a quarter of an hour, the new attacker Benedict Hollerbach had to get out with an injury in the left rear thigh. There was U21 Vice-European champions Nelson Weiper, who, after some vertebrae last week, is about to extend the contract with the Rheinhessen.
As a result, however, little happened at the gates. Mainz controlled the game in front of 33,305 spectators against mostly deep -sized Cologne, but after the departure of top scorer Jonathan Burkardt hardly got through in the last third. In his part, the promoted player usually played very inaccurate with the switching moments, but shortly before the break there was a big chance for Jakub Kaminski. Goalkeeper Robin Zentner parried the Schlenzer of the newcomer Stark (45th).
After the change, Cologne acted somewhat braver, Kristoffer Lund aimed only in centimeters in this phase (49.). When Mainz then seemed to take command again, the 05er ran into a counterattack after his own corner and fog was the last man only stopped by foul. Cologne now brought new signing Ragnar Ache, who later had to get off the square, and intensified the offensive efforts.
This was rewarded in the final phase. Bülter used a cross of substitute Luca Waldschmidt.
