There was unrest on the Champs-Élysées in the center of Paris after Paris-Saint-Germain (PSG) won the Champions League in Budapest on Saturday evening, the AFP news agency reported. Crowds also took to the streets elsewhere in Paris, in some cases leading to riots.
About 20,000 people gathered on the Champs-Élysées, police estimated. According to the French channel BFM TV, people set off fireworks there and the police responded with flash grenades and tear gas. A bus stop at the Champs-Élysées, among other things, was damaged.
Shops on the Champs-Élysées had boarded up their windows in advance to prevent damage. They had learned from last year, when PSG also won the Champions League and the celebrations degenerated into destruction, among other things.
There was also unrest in other parts of Paris, according to AFP. For example, rioters stormed the ring road and clashed with the police at the PSG stadium. Police made hundreds of arrests in the French capital.
About a hundred thousand people are expected in Paris on Sunday afternoon for PSG’s tribute.
