Do you dream of a job in healthcare, but do you doubt whether you are suitable for it? Healthcare organization Welthuis Says: yes! Whether you are an experienced nurse whether you want to train internally to be a caretaker: Welthuis is not looking for the stereotype care worker, but for real people who want to do something beautiful for their fellow man.
Ries van Herk has been working for five years Well -housein the department for young people with dementia. “That is my favorite target group to work with, before I came to Welthuis I already did that at another organization. I work here with very sweet colleagues where I can lose my egg and I can support my colleagues with my experience.”
A care job full of variation
“In my work I help young people with dementia with their daily necessities,” says Ries. “That means washing, dressing, brushing up and shaving in the morning. But it is also wider than that: I make sure that the residents have a nice day and everyone feels calm and comfortable.”
That means a lot of switching for Ries. “If a resident starts to feel restless, sad or angry for whatever reason, other residents can be ignited. It has a kind of domino effect. Every resident has his own disease and everyone is in other phases of dementia.” So everyone receives personalized care from Ries and his colleagues, to ensure that the atmosphere in the department remains positive for every resident.
Ries and his colleagues are busy with everything that comes with healthcare. “We serve medication, keep in touch with family and talk to the psychologists of the residents. In addition, we are also practical things: if a TV or telephone from a resident does not work, we help them with it. We organize activities in which people can lose their energy and ensure peace to prevent overstimulation.”

A good atmosphere
Ries feels well in place within his team. “We have grown a lot with each other and want to achieve something beautiful together.” An important plus of the team is their adaptability. “There are people in the department who are deteriorating fast in their illness, which also means that the work is changing. My colleagues like to learn new things and work hard.” The atmosphere is also good on a personal level: “We are very open and give each other support if something is wrong.”
A few students or trainees are always walking around in the department. At Welthuis there is an extensive possibility to be trained internally. “As a student you belong to the team. Many of the students eventually become our regular colleagues, I think that is very cool.”
The good atmosphere is not only pleasant, it is also very important. “Our residents sometimes forget who we are, what we come to do and what our name is. But because we really have a click with our residents, they get a good and familiar feeling when they see us.”
Break through stereotypes
There are many stereotypes around working in healthcare. Ries knows all about it: “Many stamps are stuck on you, especially when you work as a man in healthcare. For example, you are found less tough, while you should be tough as a carer. You are immune to dirty smells and not afraid of puke or blood.”
“I am quite a tough guest, I love football and archery and drinking a beer in the pub. But at the same time I can take care of people in my work with a lot of love and softness. It seems very nice to me if more tough men are added in healthcare.”
Come on
“If you want to work, there is a job for you in healthcare,” says Ries. There are many different options in this. “The most important thing is that you love people and get a good feeling to help people. You can store all your talents in healthcare. For example, I sometimes play the guitar for the residents, they make it calm.”
“Welthuis is a very nice, stable employer for me. I really feel like and supported here, also in difficult times. When I was sick for a long time, I was well taken care of and afterwards I could reintegrate in a nice way.”
