Kickboxer Rico Verhoeven (36) resigns his world heavyweight title. He successfully defended that title for twelve years. Verhoeven has had his contract with the international kickboxing organization Glory terminated and says he wants to focus on new opportunities within combat sports.
“After more than twelve years, fifteen world titles and countless unforgettable evenings, I have decided to resign my Glory heavyweight title,” he writes on Instagram. “To all the fans who have been part of this incredible journey: thank you for the memories, the energy and the respect. This is not a goodbye, but a ‘see you later’.”
According to The Telegraph Verhoeven and Glory were unable to reach an agreement about his future within the organization. The Brabander would also disagree with the course the organization is currently taking. The kickboxer would also like to practice other combat sports, such as MMA, and would like to record this contractually with Glory, writes RTL Nieuws. But this would never have happened.
Verhoeven’s management is said to have repeatedly emphasized to Glory that there are more opportunities for Verhoeven than the ‘traditional role’ that he can now fulfill within Glory, but this was allegedly not heeded. It is not yet clear what Verhoeven will do next.
