A circle closes on the third album by The Lathums: the formidable predecessor of the quartet, from Nothing to a little bit more, the melancholic The Smiths-Cinemascope, was a lot more, the opening “Leave No Stone Unturned” is more of the coral. Their singer, James Skelly, had made the debut in 2021.
Here Chris Taylor was sitting on the controls – who in turn supervised the last album by Skelly’s band. But also the fascination of reggae, which once discharged with the ska spoils of “I See Your Ghost”, is recovered in “Refects of Lessions Left” and “Stellar Cast”, albeit subtle. In the discipline, the Lathums pop purists of old school remain outrageous in the discipline.
This testifies to the incredibly simple and simply good “Heartbreaker” as well as the Beatles Ballad Teaching “Unrequited Love”. However, there are surprises: “Surrounded by Beauty” is a party snapshot from a dim light bar in Soho, where the open third shirt button is desired and a preference for Neil Diamond or Tom Jones are mandatory. And the almost the-related final “Long Shadows” is her previous masterpiece thanks to vocal, emotional and dynamic emphasis.
