Psychedelic R’n’B-Country-Pop, which is difficult to grasp but still focused.
Saya Gray seems to be bored quickly. The Canadian 2022-Sebüt with Japanese-Scottish musician parents was less album than a fascinating, stimulating overflowing 19-track collage from experimental pop, electro-r’n’b, folk, field recording and more. Also on Saya she supposedly disparages disparate sounds, lets tracks flow into each other.
Slanted? Yes. But with hit potential!
“Shell (of a man)” seems as if not Beyoncé, but Billie Eilish tried line-dancing. The slow-motion r’n’b from “Line Back 22” leads to anarchic drums, industrial sounds and singing loops in a thunderstorm. “HBW” mixes ghostly hip-hop with acoustic guitar picking.
However, despite its far -tailed production, Saya has become a more focused and more catchy work. The folk and country vibe runs through the plate in the form of Western guitar and pedal steel as a thread. “Puddle (of me)” or “10 Ways (to Lose Your Crown)” offer contaminated psychedelic-Americana pop with beguiling hook lines. Similar to “… thus is why (i don’t jump 4 love)”, which still puts a rustic rock groove. Slanted? Yes. But with hit potential!
